A Broward Sheriff’s Office detention deputy has been charged with one count of misdemeanor battery for repeatedly striking an inmate, Broward State Attorney Harold F. Pryor announced.

The Oct. 29, 2020, incident occurred in a medical or infirmary unit at the North Broward Bureau jail in Pompano Beach during medication rounds. The deputy is accused of using a flashlight to repeatedly strike the 24-year-old male inmate’s hands and fingers while trying to close a cell door flap.

Delroy Rose, 56, is expected to be arraigned in Broward County Court in the coming weeks. His initial court appearance date has not yet been scheduled. Broward prosecutors filed the one-count information, or charging document, this week. Public records related to the case are available on www.browardclerk.org under case number 21004730MM10A.

If convicted, the deputy could face a maximum punishment of up to one year in jail.
