ASSISTANT STATE ATTORNEY

ASSISTANT STATE ATTORNEY – STOP Grant Position – Domestic Violence Unit
Starting Salary: $115,000/year
Grant Position: Full-time, Domestic Violence Unit, in Fort Lauderdale, FL
This position requires an experienced assistant state attorney for the STOP Grant Position in our Domestic Violence Unit. This job description is a broad outline of the duties and responsibilities of this position and will be amended as needed to meet the program priorities of the State Attorney’s Office and ensuing work requirements. It should not be construed as a contract.
Qualifications:
- Strong knowledge of Florida domestic violence law and the Rules of Evidence
- Excellent trial advocacy, legal research, and writing skills
- Excellent communication and critical thinking skills
- A minimum of three to five years of experience as a prosecutor
- Good time management and organizational skills
- Must be able to work independently and as a team member
Duties and Responsibilities:
The following duties are representative of the position but are not intended to be an exhaustive list of all responsibilities. - Conduct jury trials, non-jury trials, preliminary and pretrial hearings, and other related courtroom proceedings.
- Investigate, evaluate, and prepare cases for trial, focusing on non-fatal strangulation DV cases with the highest risk for victims.
- Communicate with and serve as a liaison to victims, their family members, witnesses, and law enforcement personnel.
- Collect data required for program evaluation.
- Review protocols with members of the agency working group to address preventing, identifying, and responding to strangulation victims.
- Participate in working group activities.
- Coordinate with personnel assigned to the implementation and oversight of the project for all activities related to the program.
- Be available to travel to attend training seminars and participate in community outreach, including informing the community of services available to the victims and survivors.

SPECIAL VICTIM ADVOCATE
Salary: $45,000/year
Grant Position: Full-time (present to June 2027) Monday to Friday, in Fort Lauderdale, FL
This is a specialized Victim Advocate position that will be responsible for independent work acting as liaison between assistant state attorneys and victims of crime by providing crisis intervention, supportive counseling and resource/referral services to victims of sex crimes and domestic violence.
Minimum Requirements:
High school diploma or equivalency and two years’ experiences with work in the area of criminal justice, social science, counseling, public contact or customer service; or an equivalent combination of training and experience.
Bachelor’s Degree or MSW and one (1) year experience in the State Attorney’s Office and/or work in the area of criminal justice, social science, counseling, public contact or customer service; or an equivalent combination of training and experience.
Preferred fluency in Spanish and/or Creole.
Necessary skills:
- Possess a nonjudgmental attitude
- Possess the ability to establish empathetic relationships with crime victims
- Have the ability to communicate well, both verbally and in writing
- Have the ability to access community resources and advocate effectively for victims
Duties and responsibilities:
- Inform Victims of crime of rights within the criminal justice system/Constitution
- Provide crisis and supportive counseling to victims of domestic violence and sex crimes
- Accompany victims to pre-filing interviews, discovery depositions, and court appearances
- Assist victims in understanding the criminal justice process
- Make referrals to appropriate community agencies
- Intervene on behalf of victims or their family members who are having difficulty accessing community services
- Provide Judicial Accompaniment to Community Resource referral appointments
- Assist victims/survivors in applying for Crime Victim Compensation
- Act as a liaison between victims and prosecutors
- Assist victims in developing and implementing viable safety plans
- Facilitate Judicial Support Groups / Psycho-Educational
- Facilitate training sessions for prosecutors, local law enforcement, and community agencies to enhance trauma-informed practices

SOCIAL WORKER – STOP Grant Position – Domestic Violence Unit
Salary: $60,000
Grant Position: Full-time (present to June 2027) Monday to Friday, in Domestic Violence Unit, in Fort Lauderdale, FL
This job description is a broad outline of the responsibilities and duties of the social worker and will be amended as needed to meet the program priorities of the State Attorney’s Office and their ensuing work requirements. It should not be construed as a contract.
Qualifications:
- Bachelor’s degree in Social Work or Psychology
- Domestic violence and case management experience preferred
- Excellent crisis intervention and case management skills
- Bilingual Spanish preferred
General Responsibilities:
At the direction of and in collaboration with the STOP Grant assistant state attorneys and the assistant state attorney in charge of the Domestic Violence Unit and the Victim Advocate Unit directors, the social worker carries the responsibility for providing case management services to victims of domestic violence with non-fatal strangulation. This includes, but is not limited to the following:
- Provide a safe, non-judgmental, and empowering environment to clients and staff.
- Provide individual case management, crisis intervention, and group counseling services for clients.
- Work collaboratively with agency staff, service providers, and community agencies to facilitate the delivery of services.
- Provide domestic violence information and referrals to outside agencies as needed.
- Program development including: working on special projects to benefit clients, the program, and the agency, assessing the need for additional client resources and services, and submitting ideas for program improvements to the assistant state attorneys assigned to the STOP Grant and to the assistant state attorney in charge of the Domestic Violence Unit.
Specific Duties:
Provide the following direct services:
- Provide crisis counseling and information/referrals.
- Support clients in achieving their goals in accordance with program guidelines and agency policy.
- Arrange for client transportation on an as-needed basis.
- Maintain client files according to agency documentation policy/procedure.
- Clearly document all interactions with clients.
- Attend and actively participate in staff meetings, supervision, and trainings as directed.
- Facilitate client meetings.
- Responsible for program applications. Responsible for applicant assessments for the Family Violence Option (FVO) program and any and all documentation that entails. May be required to provide FVO risk assessments at the Department of Social Services.
- Assist with the preparation of monthly and quarterly reports/statistics.
- Participate in agency events as required.
- Alert supervisor to any safety concerns.
- Other duties and responsibilities as assigned by the assistant state attorneys assigned to the STOP Grant and the assistant state attorney in charge of the Domestic Violence Unit.

LEGAL ASSISTANT (ENTRY LEVEL)
An employee in this position is responsible for performing a variety of administrative duties in assisting assistant state attorneys with case preparation. Duties involve the performance of administrative and clerical tasks related to criminal court proceedings; setting up and maintaining the attorneys’ calendars; answering calls and reading mail; transcribing; scanning; providing information to the general public; data input; and preparing appropriate legal documents and correspondence.
