A jury found a Broward Sheriff’s Office detention deputy guilty of misdemeanor battery late Wednesday after a two-day jury trial in Broward County Court.

Jurors deliberated for four hours and found Bonika Sands (DOB 2/27/1975) guilty of pepper-spraying a female inmate on September 17, 2019.

Assistant State Attorneys Jessalynn Rubio and Justin McCormack tried the case and recommended a sentence of one year of probation, adjudication of guilt, and an anger management course.

The judge handling the case withheld adjudication and sentenced Sands to complete an 8-hour course in anger management without any probation.
