Prosecutors drop charges against former Miami city commissioner and attorney
November 20, 2024
Prosecutors are dropping criminal charges against former Miami City Commissioner Alejandro “Alex” Diaz de la Portilla and attorney William W. Riley Jr., Broward State Attorney Harold F. Pryor and the State Attorney’s Office announced today.
The two men were arrested in September of 2023 after the cases were assigned to the Broward State Attorney’s Office by executive orders. The Miami-Dade State Attorney’s Office had requested the investigation should be reassigned to avoid any possible conflict of interest or appearance of impropriety.
The cases were filed in Miami-Dade Circuit Court under case numbers F23018478A and F23018478B. View the original media release here.
“After a substantial follow-up investigation and extensive depositions of witnesses, we have concluded that there is no reasonable likelihood of conviction,” Broward State Attorney Harold F. Pryor said. “When the arrests were made, I promised that our prosecutors would pursue justice in this matter and that is what we have done.”
